Mark earned his M.S in Biological Sciences from Dominican University of California. He conducted his thesis work at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, characterizing patterns of microRNA expression changes upon short- and long-term oxidative stress in the retina. Upon graduating, he continued work in the retina as a research associate studying the role of the AhR signaling cascade in the chemoprotection of the retina from environmental stress and characterizing a novel AhR ligand for potential therapeutic application. In this time, he gained an interest in cell and developmental biology with the motivation of better understanding basic mechanisms of human disease. As a PhD student and member of the Franco Lab at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus, Mark studied mechanisms of dendrite and synapse development in murine forebrain neurons. Mark earned his PhD in May 2020 and is now a Captain in the United States Army Medical Department (AMEDD). In his free time, he enjoys a good beer, playing the violin, and spending time with his cat.
